Reviewers say the PlayStation Pro is an upgrade in performance over the older PS5, but truly enjoying it requires an expensive setup.

The PS5 Pro, Sony’s new $700 luxury console, promises visual upgrades across more than 50 games. I tested 25 (yes, including “Bloodborne”) to find out.

The PlayStation 5 Pro doesn’t bother with any of that. It’s an exercise in providing less, for more, and what it does provide will only appeal to a very select group of people. It also costs $700 — $200 or more than the existing PS5 models.

Still, many graphics-conscious console gamers were looking for an excuse to use the extra pixels and HDR colors on their new 4K TVs, and spending hundreds of dollars on a stopgap console years before the PS5 served that purpose well enough.
